Tahoe Philharmonic members have been a pillar of the cultural community of the Reno/Tahoe region for over 25 years, bringing together talented musicians and passionate audiences locally and globally. James Rawie, Maestro

At Tahoe Philharmonic, the heartbeat of our organization resonates in the talent and vision of our Maestro, James Rawie. With a profound love for music and community, the Maestro not only conducts the philharmonic but also fosters a culture of artistic excellence and collaboration. His vision, determination, and leadership brings together musicians from diverse backgrounds, crafting unforgettable performances that elevate the artistic landscape of Tahoe. In 2005, he founded TOCCATA Tahoe Symphony, which he led until 2024 when he started Tahoe Phil.

Bio

 TahoePhil Artistic Director and Conductor, James Rawie, founded the Symphonic Chorus of Puerto Rico, Sinfonia-Puerto Rico Chamber Orchestra, and TOCCATA-Tahoe Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. In 2024, after serving as Artistic Director and Conductor of TOCCATA Tahoe Symphony  Orchestra and Chorus for 19 years, he and wife Nancy founded Tahoe Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus.

 

 California born, Rawie's undergraduate years were spent at the University of California, Irvine, where his first academic degree was in Psychobiology in 1969. His musical studies there included: trumpet with Jimmy Sachs, voice with Heyden Blanchard, choral conducting with Dr. Maurice Allard, and orchestral conducting with Dr. Peter Odegard. 

 

He received a Master of Musical Arts degree in Orchestral Conducting from the State University of New York, Stonybrook in 1979 as a student of David Lawton and Arthur Weisberg. He prepared Bach's St. Matthew Passion with Dr. Otto Werner Mueller at Yale University-Norfolk. 

 

He studied in Berlin, Germany; at the Aspen Music Festival; and for ten summers with Helmuth Rilling at the Oregon Bach Festival. Maestro Rawie conducted the premieres in Puerto Rico of: Brahms’ Requiem, Mozart's Requiem; Gounod's Missa Solemnis; Dvorák's Mass in D major, Mozart's Mass in C minor, and many of Bach's cantatas. In 1985 he led the first performance in Spanish of Bach's St. Matthew Passion, celebrating the tricentennial of the German master's birth which brought together 300 singers, the largest number ever to perform a major choral work in the history of Puerto Rico. 

 

From the operatic repertory, he has presented most of the Mozart operas and Menotti's Amahl and the Night Visitors

 

He took the Symphonic Chorus on tours to Spain, Catalonia, and Greece. He took TOCCATA on tours: 2015-Tuscany; 2017-Salzburg/Prague; 2019-Slovenia/Budapest; 2022-Toulouse/Barcelona 2024-Greece.  

 

James has been Xterra Triathlon age group champion for the SouthEastern or Western USA divisions for 14 consecutive years, 2017 & 2024 US National Champion, and is an Ironman. He was 2022 Xterra World Champion at Lake Molveno, Italy.

ANNE DAVIDSON, soprano, started her solo singing career before she can remember under the direction of her mother Helen. She has studied voice with Bill Reed of Circle in the Square, New York City, and Patricia McGuinness of University of California, Santa Cruz. She was the soloist in Kim André Arnesen’s Magnificat with  Vox Musica in 2022 under the direction of Daniel Paulson and the Mother in Amahl and the Night Visitors with the Reno Pops Orchestra in 2019. Annie is a recording singer-songwriter and performs solo and with her folk-rock band Raggedy in the Reno/Tahoe region. She is also a Senior Associate with EdMetric, a small education research firm, when she is not following her two daughters around.

 

STUART ALAN DUKE, baritone, earned his B.S. in Music Education at the University of Vermont in 1976, with a specialty in voice. He made his European debut in 1994 as a soloist at the Pitten International Music Festival in Austria and toured New England under the direction of Robert DeCormier, performing as The Loudspeaker, in Viktor Ullmann’s Holocaust Opera, The Emperor of Atlantis. He was a founding member and soloist with the Vermont Symphony Orchestra Chorus. He received his Masters of Music at UNR in Vocal Performance. Local performances include Melchoir in Amahl and the Night Visitors, Don Alphonso in Cosi fan tutti, Baron Zeta in La Traviata, Reverend Olin Blitch in Floyd’s Susannah, and Mr. Gobenot in Menotti’s The Medium. His appearances with Nevada Opera include Fiorello in The Barber of Seville, & Yamadori in Madame Butterfly. He is a founding member of TahoePhil.

 

ANNA HELWING, soprano, was born and raised in Poland where she earned B.A. and M.A. in English and American Literature.  She also studied piano and organ at the Wroclaw School of Organ. In 2008 she received her MA in vocal performance at Univ. Nevada, Reno, studying with with Dr. Katharine DeBoer.  She performed solo concerts in Germany, Italy, and Poland, collaborating with international artists, including early music Swiss pan-flutist Philippe Emmanuel Haas. She regularly appears as a soloist with TAHOE PHILHARMONIC, Sierra Nevada College Choir, NorthStar Chamber Players, Opera Bel Canto of Reno, Nevada Opera, and organizers of Valhalla Arts Festival and San Francisco International Arts Festival.  She resides in South Lake Tahoe, where she teaches piano and voice at Lake Tahoe Community College, and works as a church music director and organist. She conducted Tahoe Choir 2015-17.

 

CLIFFORD RICHARDSON, violinist, began violin studies at age 7 at the Nevada School of the Arts in Las Vegas. His career encompasses solo, chamber, and orchestral performances; he has been featured as a soloist with the Henderson Symphony Orchestra, as a chamber musician for the UNLV Chamber Choir, and was co-concertmaster of the Nevada All-State Orchestra. He won first prizes at the Silver State and Bolognini Competitions for violin performance. He performed at the Academy of Country Music Awards in 2012 and 2016, sharing the stage with notable artists like Little Big Town and Tim McGraw, and has served as concertmaster for orchestras in Northern Nevada.

 

LORELEI VAN PEBORGH, mezzo, grew up in San Diego listening to classical music and attending operas and symphonic concerts.  She learned to play the violin, piano and cello.  In  a Vermont high school she discovered her fourth instrument, the voice, and since then has thoroughly enjoyed singing in choirs.  With a broad vocal range that allows her to transition between tenor, alto and soprano ranges. Her three children recognize her passion for singing as the "balm that feeds her soul".  From 2011-2020 she was a soloist with Sierra Nevada College Community Choir, and is a regular soloist with North Tahoe Community Choir under the direction of Donna Axton.

 

DEBBIE SESSIONS, coloratura soprano began acting and singing at a young age when she was cast in The Sound of Music as Marta, one of the von trap children. As a teen she sang with the elite Los Altos High School Main Street Singers.  From there she studied Music and Art at Linfield College and sang in multiple choirs and light operas (Stanford Savoyards) in the San Francisco bay area before coming to Reno in 2005.  She has sung with Nevada Opera Chorus, Reno Philharmonic chorus, and Toccata. She took a 13 year break from music to raise a family with three kids and a lot of pets. Her daytime job is in online marketing  and teaching vintage fashion history at VintageDancer.com  She is very glad to be back singing and now soloing with Tahoe Phil.
